I found this a fascinating conversation, and had some random thoughts about it. You covered a great deal of ground, so I'll pick out a couple things. 1) I think the pendulum swing against tech and the critique of it is both a natural occurrence, much like we see in the pendulum swing small scale of electorates that go Democrat for 1-2 cycles and then the response to swing back to Republican -- but that withdrawal from the tech and internet spaces is also a response to information overload, now that we have the gain of all knowledge, there's a lazy man's attitude of "well, I don't need anymore" and they shrug it off. But I'm curious to how the information overload contributes to things such psychological confusion and this addiction-like craving for security, hence leading to severe anxiety because you realize how finite your capacity for self-knowledge really is coupled with the confusion of sorting all that out, on top of the existential realization that you have very little control over events, and doom-scrolling or engagement in these communities either provides no relief or gives a false sense of it along with community because you are affirming either your anxiety, fears or getting reassurance from people who don't challenge the distorted thinking driving your anxiety. Hopefully that made sense.
2) Have been reading "Psychology as Religion" by Dr. Paul Vitz, and there is the discussion that essentially, psychology is the rise of secular religion to explain how oneself interacts with and reacts in the world; this came to mind as you discussed how politics doesn't seem to have an end goal, and how people no longer seem to have end goals or meaning. In the Christian ethos, our end goal is unification with Christ and God in heaven; but when that transcendence is stripped away in the secular world, what are we striving for if we've done away with virtue? Where does our inherent meaning come from, or lead to as an end goal in life, if we aren't striving for higher attainment (God)? These are not meant as a criticism, just where my brain went in listening to the podcast. It completely derailed my plans for today's post, so I'll be touching on these bits.
